There are many people around the world who have decided to go vegan and vegetarian and there are also a great many who have decided to give up meat for months at a time, or indeed for a couple of days each week. There are many reasons why people do this and it is a very positive move in terms of animal welfare and the environment. Owing to this raise in popularity we have seen some great ideas from some of the best chefs in the industry, talking about meat free options which you can find for the days or the moments when you aren’t eating meat. I was inspired to do this by the brilliant chef Rick Andreoli Montreal, who often shares some great meat free recipes.
Here then, are some great substitutes for meaty meals.
Replacement Meat
To those of you who want to give the meat a break but you really don’t wan to miss your favourite dishes, look for Beyond meat, which is a plant based substitute. These products look like meat, taste like meat and will absolutely blow you away. The company has burgers, sausages and even mince.
Falafel
Falafel is an absolutely delicious option which can be served either in a burger or in balls which you can then add to a tortilla wrap. To make falafel you simply need to grind up some cooked chick peas with some cumin, paprika and some oregano, mixed together with an egg. Once you have the dough simply form it into balls and then fry in some hot oil, delicious.
Cauliflower Wings
You may not believe this but cauliflower is a super versatile vegetable which can easily be used as a meat replacement. One highly popular dish is cauliflower wings, which can give you that tasty snack that you need when not eating meat. Whilst they do meet the texture and flavour of chicken, it is important to remember that the nutritional value is not the same, so you’ll have to make sure you get some protein too. Simply par-boil the cauliflower florets and then dip them straight into some hot oil, and serve with buffalo sauce.
Stir Fry
A stir fry is the ultimate way to enjoy a delicious meal without the need for meat. In reality many of us put chicken and beef into a stir fry, but we very rarely get anything from that apart from texture, which can easily be replaced using some mushrooms. The idea of a stir fry is to pack in a large range of delicious vegetables and then add some sauce, it is in the sauce that we find the flavour, rather than in the contents of the star fry. And so as long as you have a great sauce recipe, you will be able to make a delicious, veggie packed stir fry which is going to leave you full and satisfied.
