If you think that the world of public relations may be for you then you first need to understand what are the skills that are required to not only work within this industry, but also to become successful in this industry. To get to the bottom of this we spoke with some of the team at Interdependence Public Relations, who have given us time insight into what you may need in order to work in this industry. Interdependence has a reputation as being incredibly difficult to get a job with, such are their high standards. which is why we felt that they would be the best guys to ask when it comes to finding out what the skillset is that you are going to need, let’s take a look.
Communication Skills
At the heart of PR is communication and you must ensure that yours is to an incredible high standard. You are going too be speaking to people of all levels in different industries and from different backgrounds. You need to also understand and identify how to speak to different people and marketplaces, and be able to adapt your style depending on which one you are communicating with. You could be chatting with a CEO in the morning about their goals and then a press officer on the afternoon setting out your plans, you have to be able to communicate well with a wide range of people.
Personal Skills
As well as having great communication skills you need to understand people and show off that you have impeccable interpersonal skills. Much of PR is about getting people on board and in order to do that you need to know how to deal with people from all walks of life.
Creativity
The essence of good PR is about being creative and packaging or branding your message in a certain way. You will find when you enter this world that the level of creativity expected is very high and your clients are going to trust that you can think outside the box in order to deliver their results.
Energy
This is a job which is going to require a large amount of energy on your part and you must be prepared for working long hours, whilst still being efficient. On any given day you could have client meetings in the morning, event planning in the afternoon and then an event on the evening and you have to be at your best throughout each of these times.
Leadership
Whether it is organizing events or taking charge of a project which the company is working on leadership is a key skill which you will need in this industry. You cannot be a shrinking violet if you wish to succeed in PR and those working with you will expect you to step up and take ownership of a situation.
