Picking a Shot
Whilst good photographers can take a shot of just about any kind of scene, at this stage you would be far better served if you just picked one area of photography and worked hard on becoming great at that. This could be nature shots, portraits, urban landscapes or any other niche which you feel passionate about. If you can do this you will be able to really master what is required in each genre and then take those skills into something else in the future. Nature photography for example, requires a deep understanding of tones, shade and lighting, as well as being able to identify the perfect shot in the middle of a large landscape. You will not improve as much as you’d like if you do nature one day and then cars or portraits the next. Pick a field and stay there a while.
Sometimes we are our own worst critic and sometimes we can see beauty where others cannot. This is why it would be a great idea to make sure that you are getting feedback from people about your shots. This could be from family and friends or it can also be on your social media channels. People will be very quick to point out what you have done right or wrong online, and this can seriously help you to take things to the next level. The photo community on Instagram is a great place for you to share your images and see what people think of them.
And finally the key is to get in as much practice as you possibly can. Always take your camera with you wherever you go and just keeping playing around with shutter speeds and settings so that you can take the perfect image when you see it. Practice is absolutely critical if you want to take great photos with high quality.
