The first boss which I had wafter leaving college, the brilliant Roger Wolfson, used to often say to me that an hour before 8 was worth 2 after. What Roger was getting at is that the value of an hour before 8 in the morning, is worth 2 hours post-8am, and today I want to explore this a little bit. The first thing to say is that whilst you can highlight the fact that both are just 60 minutes, so technically speaking an hour is always an hour, in terms of what you can achieve, there is no substitute for an hour before 9, and here is why.
Mental Approach
To anyone who has ever really overslept and woken up at 11am or 12pm, you will know that feeling of the day getting away from you, something which can very easily happen when you wake up so late. This is the opposite of what you will feel when you wake up early, and you are going to feel as though you have the entire day in front of you. This helps us to feel more in charge of our lives and our day, and it gives us the perfect way to plan the day.
Before The Chaos
When something unexpected happens in the day, it usually wouldn’t happen first thing in the morning. This is why you can use this time to get things done, without fear of interruption or of things changing. Many people like to get up early and attack their inbox at this time of day, because they know that there is less coming in and that allows them to get on top early, and again, be in charge of their day.
The Sleepers
There is certainly a sense that everyone else is asleep and you are already on it, when you get up early and get started. This can prove to a be a real motivator and it can give you a big confidence boost too, the notion that you are up and alive whilst everyone else is snoozing. This of course may not actually be the case but that means very little, it is all about how you feel and how you can best approach your day.
Less World Traffic
And finally, at this time in the morning, there is far less traffic than there is during the rest of the day, and we are not just talking cars. There are less people online, less people working, less people in the street and yes, there are also less cars on the road. All of this means that you can get from A to B easier than you can during the rest of the day, and that is why this is a more valuable hour, because it won’t take up as much of your time.
They may both be 60 minutes, but there is no doubt that an hour before 8, is certainly worth 2 afterwards.
