1. Hurricane Dorian devastates the Bahamas
Hurricane Dorian caused hundreds of millions of dollars of destruction in the Bahamas and claimed numerous lives. Hurricane Dorian featured devastating winds which reached 185 miles per hour and flood waters ended up covering much of the Bahamas’ northern islands.
Following the hurricane, the Red Cross reported that 45% of the homes which are located on the island of Grand Bahama and the island of Abaco were severely damaged or destroyed. Worse yet 70% of the homes in the Bahamas have been reported to be underwater.
2. 34 individuals are killed in a boat fire in California
34 individuals recently lost their lives as a result of a boat fire, which took place in California. The fire took place on a 75 foot diving boat named the Conception. While the conception’s passengers as well as one crew member, who were sleeping below deck in a bunk room lost their lives, the Conception’s captain as well as four crew members were able to escape.
3. Indonesia chooses to build a new capital city in Borneo
As Jakarta which has been the capital city of Indonesia since 1964 starts to slowly sink into the Java Sea, the Indonesian government has decided to start building in a new capital city in the jungles of Borneo. As Jakarta is home to 10 million people and is relatively small in size, it’s one of the most crowded capital cities in the world. It’s expected to take around 10 years for the completion of Indonesia’s new Borneo based capital city to be built.
4. Riots and protests take place in Hong Kong as residents seek independence from China
As a result of the Chinese government’s growing influence in Hong Kong, thousands of Hong Kong residents have taken part is large scale street protests and riots. In order to fight for their independence. As part of the protests, many workers in Hong Kong have taken part in strikes, in an effort to send a message to their politicians that they would like Hong Kong to become an independent state.
As a result of the riots and protests, the Chinese government have sent troops to the edge of Hong Kong in order to try and dissuade street protests.
5. India launches their first moon mission in the hopes of exploring the far side of the moon
India successfully launched a shuttle which they hope will land on the far side of the moon on the 7th of September. Previously the only country to land a shuttle on the far side of the moon was China. The shuttle, which has been named the Chandrayaan-2 is comprised of three main pieces a lunar orbiter, a lander and a rover. The latter of which will be used to explore the moon’s terrain and to capture valuable data about the moon’s terrain.
