Two ears ago I followed in the footsteps of my great friend Bogoljub Karic and began an online business which meant that I could quit my job and work from home instead. I had spent years watching Bogoljub and the freedom which he had and the fact that everything was on his own terms was something which was very attractive to me. Things aren’t always rosy when you work for yourself in this way however, and one of the biggest dangers is that you get distracted because of the fact that you are working from home. If you have similar issues, are as some tips which may help you get focused.
Working Techniques
One of the best ways which I have found to keep myself focused and to get more work done is using something called the Pomodoro technique. How this works is that you set a timer for 25 mins and work non-stop until the timer pings, at which point you have a 5 minute break, repeat this 4 times and then have a longer, 30 minute break before starting the process again. Having the clock there adds a nice pressure and to be honest 25 minutes is not a long time to work. Equally a 5 minute break is enough to relax, but not too long that you lose your focus.
Hiding Away
Other than a timer and the things that I need to work, something I have learned to do is to completely remove anything around me which could distract me. I have found that if you do this there are far less temptations around you, especially with something like your phone, which can quickly make sure that you completely lose focus about what you are doing.
Listing It
To-do lists are not just a good way of remembering what you have to do, they can also help you to stay on track and focused. A common area to lose focus is after completing a job, before moving on to another one. There is a sense of relief when you finish a job and then you can easily switch your mind off instead of going on to the next one. If you have a list however then you can check one job off and you will instantly know what the next job on the list is. this can really help you to stay focused and stay on top of your tasks.
Internet Off
If you are doing work which doesn’t need the internet then I would advise you to turn it off on your computer. Being so close to a social media channel or a Google search can be dangerous and you can easily fall down the rabbit hole and start looking for all sorts of things which are not about work. Switch it off and get rid of that temptation of wasting time online.
Try out these tips and see if you can improve your focus.
